The cafe is called Early BKK and, using household waste recycling, this establishment aims to serve the entire community, from large families to pets.
This cafe is much more than a cafe, it is a space open to the community. The idea came from Kaytita Chaisuksiri, who opened an alternative space in her village with the intention of alerting her neighbors and visitors to change their habits in order to lead a more sustainable life.
Early BBK is in Sammakorn Village, home to a community that is primarily characterized by large families and almost always with pets – and so the space is open to all.
With this in mind, the design studio Spacecraft decided to figure out what recycled materials it could use in the construction of the and realized that families were essentially discarding milk cartons and glass bottles. So they decided to use these containers as the main materials throughout the project, using them to make furniture finishes and architectural facades.
They transformed milk cartons into tabletops and boards, with which they made doors, ceilings, chairs, and tables, adapting the color used for aesthetic harmony. Beer bottles, on the other hand, were used on the facade – with about 600 placed on the building’s structure – as doorknobs or broken into small pieces and integrated into the floor and walls. In addition, the building has solar panels that are its main source of energy. Creating less waste and being conscious about their ecological footprint is a key point in Early BKK, and aims to encourage the entire community to cooperate in the effort.
The building is small and has two floors. The entrance to the cafe offers a comfortable and welcoming environment, with a small patio, a tree, and space to leave pets. On the second floor is the main bar with coffee machines and equipment, pet products, some seating, and also an area with second-hand clothes. The second floor, with large windows and seating space, is designed for various purposes, including holding workshops.
Early BKK’s operation is guided by green and sustainable concepts. It is therefore free of straws, plastic cups, and has discounts for customers who bring their own packaging. Besides serving the community, the café wants to raise awareness about recycling and show that it is possible to change the cities we live in. “Believing in small gestures can make the world a better place,” and this café aims to be a small part in creating change in society.
