Disney movies, cassettes with the songs we used to listen to on the radio, CDs that no longer have a place on our computer. Today we’re waxing nostalgic, but also practical: what should we do with the cassettes and CDs we no longer use? Read this article to find out the answer.
There are few homes left with devices for playing CDs and cassettes, whether they’re for video or just sound. For those who still manage to find a way to use them, congratulations! For the majority of us who are stuck with that pile inherited from previous decades, we have an answer.
Unfortunately, cassettes and CDs are not considered packaging and therefore cannot be recycled. Unless there are occasional campaigns to collect these objects – such as Quercus’ “Let’s record this idea” – the most ecological solution for this waste is to take it to an ecocenter, a large park made up of several containers where you can leave recyclable waste that can’t be placed in recycling bins. This is the advice of Sociedade Ponto Verde, which, when contacted by Peggada, also explains that “once the materials have been placed in the ecocenter, they are forwarded by waste management companies to other companies and entities that continue with the transformation and recycling process.
Ecocenters can be found all over the country. In total, there are 231 of these parks in Portugal, in the north, center, south and islands. The address of the ecocenters can be found here. Before going to the recycling center, it is important to confirm that the waste to be disposed of can be delivered there. Sometimes, not all recycling centers accept all types of waste due to storage space or for security reasons.
If it is not possible to go to a recycling center, discarded CDs and DVDs should be placed in the unsorted waste container. This applies to both the disk itself and the box. Even if it is made of plastic, it is not considered packaging.
Peggada has been writing about the best way to deal with some of the items that cause the most doubts. You can see here what to do with make-up, pots and pans, cork stoppers, pens and even shoes.
