Butter made out of carbon? It exists and it tastes just like real butter

We know that, just like us, there are hundreds of other projects wanting to do more for the planet. We went to find out more about what drives them and what we can expect from their project. One startup, an interview, five questions.
We spoke to Narciso Antunes, founder of Quizzability, a sustainability education startup that uses interactive quizzes and real-life case studies to teach the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Quizzability began with the mission of making sustainability knowledge fun and accessible to everyone. After more than a decade working on sustainability projects, in 2023 the team created a platform of simple-to-use and fun quizzes, simplifying complex sustainability topics.
1. Present your project in one paragraph. Go for it!
Of course! Quizzability is an online sustainability education platform that uses interactive quizzes and real-life case studies to teach the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We want to make practical knowledge about sustainability accessible, dynamic and, above all, impactful, empowering people and organizations to take concrete action.
The issue of sustainability is complex and often difficult to integrate into people’s and companies’ daily lives. There is a huge gap between wanting to make a difference and knowing how to do it. Quizzability solves this by transforming complex concepts into simple, practical lessons adapted to different audiences, especially adults.
As well as promoting knowledge, we’re inspiring action! It’s not just about learning, it’s about discovering, questioning, thinking and implementing.
One of our great differentiators is that we enable users to understand the different aspects of sustainability and the impact of sustainable practices, something that is often overlooked or misunderstood. Many organizations want to make a difference, but sometimes they don’t know how. This is where we come in: training people, providing tools to raise awareness of problems and solutions, and thus fostering impact.
For the end user, and despite the fact that it’s a growing issue, many people still don’t know how to integrate sustainability into their day-to-day lives, whether at home, at work or in business decisions. Another major problem is the misconception that sustainability is only synonymous with environmentalism. With our content, we show that sustainability goes far beyond that, encompassing social, economic and even cultural dimensions. Our aim is to create a more complete and comprehensive vision.
4. What are the biggest obstacles to working in this area?
One of the biggest challenges is the difficulty in measuring and communicating the impact of sustainability. Many companies and organizations start initiatives without knowing how to evaluate progress or real results. This problem generates demotivation and the false idea that sustainability or change does not bring concrete benefits.
Another obstacle is the lack of specific training and basic sustainability literacy. Many people still don’t understand how small daily actions can have big impacts or how they can make a practical contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals.
Finally, we face the barrier of mentalities. Sustainability is often seen only as an environmental issue, when in fact it encompasses fundamental areas such as social equality, circular economy and human well-being. Changing this perspective and bringing sustainability to the center of decision-making is an ongoing and challenging job, but one that we face with enthusiasm!
5. What achievement are you most proud of while leading this project?
Without a doubt, the impact we have already achieved. Seeing hundreds of people interacting with the platform and turning knowledge into action is incredible. Knowing that we are helping individuals and organizations to understand and apply sustainable practices, whether in Portugal, Spain, Brazil or Canada – markets where we are already present – is something that fills us with pride. Being in different latitudes and seeing how our solutions are adaptable to different cultural and professional contexts confirms the value of our work. What’s more, it’s very gratifying to realize that we’re opening up important conversations about sustainability in areas where it’s still little explored. Every positive piece of feedback, every success story and every partnership created reinforces the feeling that we are on the right track. These achievements are proof that small steps can generate big changes and that Quizzability’s impact is just beginning! It’s also nice to win innovation awards (two) and to be finalist/shortlisted in national and international competitions. Taking Quizzability to the global stage, being finalists in the Reimagine Education Awards by Quacquarelli Symonds (a company dedicated to university rankings) or participating in the Web Summit and other major international events, shows us that an idea born in Viseu (Portugal) can impact the world.
What’s more, the testimonials of those who have already used Quizzability and used what they’ve learned with us are worth gold!
