With just three lessons, the fears of riding a bicycle disappear, and you will be able to have a more environmentally friendly mobility. We explain you how.
It’s March already, but it’s never too late to add one more resolution to the 2022 list: learn to ride a bike.
There are only good reasons to do so, one of the first being that it promotes physical activity. The second is obvious in this day and age – saving on the exorbitant price of fuel – and the third reason is the same one that leads you to explore Peggada: reducing your environmental impact by trading in your car for your bicycle.
According to the latest Copenhagenize Index, a ranking of “Bike Friendly” cities, in 2019 the first place was given to Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. The podium was also occupied by Amsterdam, in Netherlands, and Paris, France.
Portugal didn’t even make to the top 20, so it’s time to contribute to the upcoming rankings by learning to pedal. Discover where you can sign up.
Decathlon
Decathlon has the bikes in the store and the training to teach you how to ride through the streets of Cascais. The beginner’s classes are intended for people from 5 to 75 years old and last 50 minutes.
During this time you will be able to learn how to ride a bicycle, but also inline skates or skateboard.
A class starts at 13 euros and is available on Wednesdays from 3 pm to 5 pm, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 7 pm.
You can book yours by mail or phone (parque.cascais@decathlon.com/ 214699605).
Clube LXCycling
Call for people over 15 who don’t know how to ride a bike: these classes are for you.
It only takes three sessions with Clube LXCycling to be able to pedal and control the bike.
The course takes place at Parque do Calhau, in Monsanto, or at other locations on the day and hour indicated on the registration form.
Speaking of which, you should fill it out online and choose one of three options:
1. Pack of three 60-minute classes: 50€, personal accident insurance included;
2. Pack three 60-minute classes + bike: 60€, personal accident insurance included;
3. Extra lessons of 60 min: 17€.
Câmara Municipal de Lisboa (Lisbon City Hall)
If you are from Lisbon, the Cenas a Pedal course is another option.
The school was established in 2008 and since then has been giving rides to several people who thought they would never be able to balance on a bike.
Ana Pereira and Bruno Santos are the project’s trainers, and besides giving bicycle classes to adults, they give initiation classes to children and teenagers, and even mechanics workshops.
Courses are available from time to time and usually cost 20€ per person. You can sign up here.
Besides Lisbon, there are also classes being given in other parts of the country: Almada, Cascais, Oeiras and Porto.
