Artificial intelligence (AI) technology, machine learning, and statistical modeling will be shared with NGOs, research organizations, and governments to promote the democratization of data access.
Studies developed by Microsoft revealed a significant gap in the capacity of the Global South – target of extreme weather events, food and
poverty insecurity – in making data-driven decisions and turning them into effective actions.
Microsoft was the main technology partner of COP27 and used the occasion to share new projects and partnerships that will help combat this gap, allowing access to high quality data and technology, which are fundamental for the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Expansion of the AI for Good Research Lab
The AI for Good Research Lab will be extended to Egypt and Kenya with the goal of creating a team of data scientists in Africa, who will work
to improve climate resilience.
Strengthening the partnership with Planet Labs
The company Planet Labs captures high-quality satellite images that, combined with AI, facilitate strategic decision-making by companies, governments, researchers, and journalists, particularly in Africa. This accelerates the development of climate change adaptation solutions.
Creation of the AI Innovation Council
To promote the improvement of climate resilience on the African continent, Microsoft has also created the AI Innovation Council, composed of African leaders from various sectors and representatives of important African organizations, such as the African Climate Foundation. The tech company will also collaborate with the Kenya Red Cross Society, PATH, Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) and Lelapa AI.
Boosting AI for Good projects in the Global South
One of the examples is the AI and IoT (Internet of Things) lab in Uruguay. In
partnership with the Government, the laboratory will help solve challenges by supporting
early stage companies, providing guidance and innovative AI solutions in the
Launch of Global Renewables Watch
Global Renewables Watch, the 1st atlas capable of mapping and measuring all full-scale solar and wind installations on Earth, is the result of a partnership between
Microsoft, Planet, and The Nature Conservancy.
Using AI and satellite imagery, this solution will provide data that will help policy makers and data scientists understand the opportunities and
renewable energy gaps and to find more effective and efficient options.
She could have studied Meteorology and Oceanography but ended up going for Communication. And that's fine because if they don't get their weather predictions right, she wasn't the one who would change that. She started by looking for sustainable ideas and projects for her university, and since then, she has never stopped (who stops, really?). She loves to watch series, but she watches few because she is demanding. You don't need much to convince her to embrace new, "greener" habits and challenges.
The money will be used to increase the team and boost the growth of the project, especially in its expansion throughout Europe and North America.
