The competition kicks off on September 18, with three teams traveling around the country in the most sustainable way possible. It’s called Journey for the Climate and the event is in its second edition.
The idea here is to show that it is possible to travel from the north to the south of the country in a sustainable way and with a greater impact on the community.
In Jounery for the Climate’s 1st edition, teams competed against each other with the aim of touring Portugal in the most sustainable way possible.
Nesta 2ª edição, para além deste objetivo, as três equipas serão desafiadas a criar o maior impacto possível na comunidade. This evaluation criterion will have a weighting of 70% in the final evaluation of the teams and will be decisive in determining the big winners, who will take part in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in November in Azerbaijan.
Over the course of 14 days, this trip will see three teams of four compete to complete a route from the north to the south of Portugal, passing through nine municipalities in the most sustainable way possible and, above all, with the greatest positive impact on the communities. During the trip, each team will manage “Climas” (a fictitious currency) which will monitor the different choices made by the participants, as well as the impact caused.
Throughout the trip, each team will have a budget in “Climas” to manage. Each team’s goal will be to spend as few “Climas” as possible.
During the competition, teams will have to overcome challenges and involve and raise awareness among communities, creating the Municipal Sustainability Route and using carbon footprint calculation tools for local businesses and the population, as well as identifying “climate stories”, thus having the opportunity to recover some “climas”.
The winning team will be the one that spends the least “climas” after evaluating the positive impact created throughout the trip in the various regions and the route that is carried out in the most sustainable way.
The official departure of the participating teams will be on September 18, 2024, at the Santa Maria do Mar Monastery in Carcavelos. They will return on October 1st.
