The company that develops the Ecosia search engine launched the Ecosia Browser on Earth Day. It’s very similar to Chrome and has versions for iOS, macOS, Android and Windows.
Ecosia, known for its tree-planting search engine, took advantage of Earth Day to launch its eco-friendly browser.
Its aim is to produce clean energy from users’ browsing activity.
The new tool is very similar to Google Chrome, although it has additional features and characteristics. In a statement released by the company, Ecosia promised a loading speed “up to three times faster than most traditional browsers” and an integrated ad blocker to reduce energy consumption.
Until now, Ecosia existed only as a search engine. By using this Google-like browser, a tree is planted for every 45 searches (on average). Profits are made from the ads that appear in searches.
Now, with the browser, there is an affiliate program for purchases in online stores – the money generated by user purchases will go towards climate projects, including planting trees. In addition, Ecosia has committed to generating 25 watts per hour (Wh) of clean energy per user every day.
The software can be downloaded for Windows and Mac on computers, but also as a mobile application for iOS and Android.
