The University of Coimbra has once again been considered the Portuguese higher education institution that contributes most to tackling the world’s biggest environmental, social and governance problems, according to the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings (QS WUR) 2025.
The University of Coimbra is the best national higher education institution in the Sustainability indicator in the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings 2025 – and the 181st in the world.
The Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings (QS WUR) 2025 have been released and place the Portuguese university in 355th place globally (out of more than 1500 participants). The University of Coimbra also stands out in the indicators “Research in international collaboration” (position 154), and “Citations by professors” (position 264). However, it is the Sustainability indicator, with yet another ranking among the world’s top 200, which reinforces the University of Coimbra’s national leadership in this field – it had already been recorded in last year’s edition.
For this particular result, indicators such as the impact that the institutions’ alumni are having on science and technology to solve climate problems are taken into account.
Speaking to Expresso Newspaper last year, the university’s rector, Amílcar Falcão, highlighted the mobility sector: they have UCicletas (shared bicycles) available and have made changes to traffic and parking in the university’s area to ensure more space for pedestrians.
The rector also highlighted “the actions developed within the scope of SDG 2 – Eradicate Hunger, ranging from the existence of a social menu (at an affordable price) in the canteens to the promotion of campaigns to combat food waste, and the existence of waste monitoring mechanisms, as well as participation in research projects and consortia to develop more sustainable solutions for production in the agri-food sector”.
