Chefs on Fire. In this festival, leftover food is transformed into energy
Here comes another edition of Chefs on Fire, one of the most important gastronomic festivals in the country. In addition to the sustainability actions that
The Earth Festival is back in Lagoa de Pataias on June 7, 8 and 9 and, despite bringing new features, the three main focuses remain: mindfulness, sustainability and community.
These are three days of immersion in nature. After a first edition in 2023, the Earth Festival is back this year – on June 7th, 8th and 9th at Lagoa de Pataias, Alcobaça – for days full of lectures, workshops, classes, interactive exhibitions, as well as stalls, massages and therapies, a cinema tent and many other activities.
“We believe that the Earth Festival offers an opportunity to highlight an exemplary event in the promotion of a natural ecosystem
Peggada asked the organization what sustainable things visitors could find at a festival that has this word as its pillar.
Here are some of the measures taken to ensure that the festival has minimal impact on the environment:
. Respect for nature: Knowing that an event of this magnitude always disturbs the normal behavior of local species, the event times are adjusted to avoid too much nocturnal activity (for two days, the doors close at midnight and on the remaining day, at 1 am). The number of concerts is also limited, with a focus on offering other types of activities that don’t involve so much noise.
. Rehabilitation of the natural ecosystem of the Pataias Lagoon: In the first edition (2023), a litter clean-up action was organized with the community throughout the Pataias Lagoon area, as a way of raising awareness to the issue. In this second edition, the clean-up action will take place at the same time as the Parish Council’s clean-up action and will include the participation of the Earth Festival’s team of volunteers (around 50 people).
. Decorating the space: Natural materials are used whenever possible to decorate the space, avoiding damaging fauna and flora when assembling logistical elements, and they use leftover fabrics and other materials that are collected from the community to produce decorations.
. Offering and encouraging vegetarian and vegan meals: the food suppliers at the Earth Festival are obliged to offer vegetarian and vegan options on their menus.
. Loan of kitchen utensils: The region is known for having a strong plastic molding industry. Taking advantage of this reality, a partnership was established with a local company that donated a large volume of reusable plastic plates, cutlery and cups to the association. These items will be available to festival-goers so that they can eat their meals without having to use the cutlery and single-use utensils of the caterers on site.
. Water sources: Water fountains are available on the event grounds and participants are encouraged to bring their reusable bottles from home and drink the water from the fountains.
. Waste sorting and recycling: In partnership with Valorsul, they have recycling bins on site and will be sorting waste. They also sort organic waste for composting and create syntropic nests in the Pataias Lagoon itself.
. Eco-Event: They are in the process of obtaining the Eco-Event label from Valorsul.
