We now consume about 80 billion new pieces of clothing every year, that’s 400% more than we did two decades ago. Scary, isn’t it?
And when it comes to motherhood and the early years of a child, this consumption can skyrocket. And it often proves to be inappropriate, since the growth of these little beings is such that the pieces come out of the drawer with almost no use.
At the same time, there are many families in need, and while consumption is not going down, let’s circulate these items.
We leave you here some options for donating baby and children’s clothes so that they will no longer take up space in your closet and will be used by those in need.
. Fundação Champagnat. It is a Private Institution of Social Solidarity (IPSS) and Non-Governmental Organization for Development (NGOD), founded by the Irmãos Maristas, which assumes its commitment to the promotion and support of initiatives, in the area of education, solidarity and the promotion of the rights and protection of children.

. Dona Ajuda. They accept everything that you no longer need, but that is still in good conditions. Men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, shoes and books to games, decoration, technology and small appliances. All donations are sorted: what is in poor condition is donated to Associação Reto à Esperança, what is in good condition but not good enough to sell is donated to social housing, and, finally, what is in good condition is put on sale at the Social Store, with the profits going entirely to the associations with which they collaborate.
. Freecycle. A non-profit movement with the goal of connecting people who have things to donate with those who need those items, including baby and children’s clothing. They are already present in several cities in the country, such as Lisbon, Torres Vedras, and Sintra.
. Reuse Ajuda de Mãe.This project supports pregnant women and families with babies, integrating unemployed mothers into working life. They accept donations of baby clothes and accessories up to 1 year old. From that age on, donations are made at Casa Solidária, also in the same space. Donations are made on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 pm to 5 pm.

. Associação Crescer bem.This project is part of the Dona Estefânia Hospital, in Lisbon, and provides personalized support to children, hospital users and their families in situations of social risk.

. Loja Comunitária do Barreiro. This store accepts donations of clothing, textiles, hygiene products, baby items, and toys, and everything is distributed to residents who are in situations of social vulnerability.

. Casa de Santo António de Lisboa.This institution welcomes mothers in precarious social situation and continues this support with their children. They accept donations of baby and children’s clothes and accessories, but in order to respond exactly to the needs of the people they support, they ask for a previous contact through the number 21 395 52 41/2 so that the donation can be scheduled and go according to what is expected.
