The calculator launched by UEFA makes it possible to assess the carbon emissions of specific areas of football, such as travel, purchased goods and facilities.
On March 6, UEFA launched the “Carbon Footprint Calculator“, a tool that aims to help member federations, clubs and leagues reduce their environmental impact and become active drivers of change. The calculator has been tailor-made for football organizations and is available to all football stakeholders.
Based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and a methodology validated by third parties, this innovative online tool took two years to develop and test, involving two dozen football organizations as well as external consultants.
According to a UEFA press releasethe calculator “enables football organizations to comprehensively assess and understand their carbon emissions, with a focus on football-specific areas such as mobility, purchased goods and services, facilities and logistics”.
In this way, the calculator aims to support all efforts to manage and reduce carbon emissions in a simplified and cost-effective way.
“The UEFA Carbon Footprint Calculator fulfills our ambition to show that football can be part of the solution in the global effort to reduce carbon emissions. By providing tools and guidance to stakeholders, we are facilitating collective action towards a more sustainable future for our sport and the planet. Together, we can demonstrate to governments, investors, fans and commercial partners that football is committed to tackling climate change in a unified and strategic way,” said UEFA Vice-President Laura McAllister in a statement.
Besides the calculator, the entity responsible for managing football in Europe has also developed a user guide, video tutorials and a complete methodological document to support users at every stage of their sustainable journey. “By offering these resources, UEFA seeks to promote transparency, consistency and comparability in carbon reporting across the football ecosystem,” reads the statement.
UEFA has incorporated climate protection into its Football Sustainability Strategy 2030with the “Strength through Unity” campaign, and is a signatory of the United Nations “Race to Zero” campaign, which calls for a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 and a net zero reduction by 2040.
According to UEFA, the Euro 2024 championship, which will be held in Germany, will set a new standard in terms of sustainability. The tournament will feature match schedules adapted to minimize travel for the teams and will offer free transport for ticket holders in the host cities.
