Achieving 100% clean energy in the venue, completely eliminating the use of plastic throughout the event and production phases, and achieving zero food waste are some of the ambitions for the next editions of Queima das Fitas do Porto.
The Academic Federation of Porto (FAP) has launched the Agenda 2030 for the Queima das Fitas do Porto (QFP), which sets out short-term measures and targets, from 2024 to 2030, in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The aim is to make Queima das Fitas do Porto greener, safer and more accessible.
By 2030, FAP is committed to using 100% clean energy at the venue, completely eliminating the use of plastic at every event and production stage, achieving zero food waste through responsible food management and distribution practices, and achieving carbon neutrality by reducing carbon emissions and promoting carbon offsetting.
Also on the agenda are the implementation of Braille signage throughout the venue and Portuguese Sign Language Translators on all stages, reaching the target of 95% of participants using public transport, recycling 90% of the waste generated at the event and obtaining ISO 20121 Certification – Sustainable Events Management System.
In this year’s edition, a number of measures have already been put in place to contribute to the sustainability of the event, including:
In terms of security, the FAP revamped the “Shelter” point to help people in vulnerable situations at the venue, provided drinking water points in various areas of the event, set up sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing points and distributed inclusive contraceptive methods at the venue, among other actions.
In order to improve accessibility, the measures included creating a restaurant area with an accessible entrance and route and with tables adapted for people with reduced mobility; providing catering suitable for food intolerances (including vegetarian and vegan products), providing Portuguese Sign Language translation on part of the stages and offering tickets for the QFP Nights to economically disadvantaged students.
“Youth and students are committed to the future and the QFP 2030 Agenda represents that commitment. A commitment based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for a greener, safer and more accessible Queima. A Queima das Fitas who belongs to everyone and is for everyone. A Queima das Fitas that reflects a responsible generation that protects the planet and supports the most fragile,” said the president of the FAP, Francisco Porto Fernandes.
