The manifesto calls for bulk sales in stores of more than 1,000 m2 and for this method to be extended to more products by 2025.
Rice, pasta, sugar, olive oil and honey. These are some of the products that cannot currently be sold in bulk. It is for this reason and for several other bulk rules that need to be updated that the “Manifesto for making bulk more flexible” was created.
Deco – Consumer’s Defense Association in Portugal, the environmental association Zero, the Maria Granel store and the Zero Waste Lab launched this manifesto on July 17, World Refill Day, two days after presenting a legislative proposal to the government with a set of measures to make this practice a rule.
The aim is to make bulk sales the norm as early as next year, at least in all stores with more than 1,000 square meters (m2).
In order for this to happen, it is proposed that a committee be set up to check the sector’s legislation and whether or not products should maintain restrictions on how they are marketed.
According to Deco, in statements to Lusa, this commission should be coordinated by the Directorate-General for Consumers (DGC) and made up of representatives from the Food and Economic Safety Authority (ASAE), the Directorate-General for Economic Activities (DGAE), the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary (DGAV), as well as elements from the areas of health, environment, distribution, retail and packaging.
By the government, the signatories of the manifesto hope that the legislative proposal will be approved, but they also defend the need to develop more awareness campaigns among consumers and economic operators.
Among the proposals included in the document is the creation of an electronic platform that brings together stores that have already adopted bulk sales. In the meantime, you can always use the Peggada directory to see which store near you has bulk options available.
