The Pépedal project has a network of local partners who reward children with products or services in exchange for the points they earn from walking or cycling to school.
The Ciclaveiro association’s PéPedal program is an initiative that promotes and encourages Aveiro’s children to walk or cycle to school in their PéPedal Trains once a week. Now, the program has created the PéPedal Friends Network, which recognizes and rewards the efforts of these children by exchanging points for products or services.
Each child now has a card with which they validate their journeys, to be converted into points and exchanged for prizes (such as school supplies, fresh fruit, bread, music and sports lessons, bicycle maintenance services, among others) with the Friends Network.
According to the program’swebsite, the Network is made up of various commercial, social and cultural projects in the city of Aveiro that identify with and recognize the advantages of active mobility for children’s health, autonomy and well-being, but also for local and social dynamics, creating proximity and more conscious consumption habits, which are fundamental to the enhancement and activation of local commerce and the pulse of local sports, social and cultural agents.
The local partners are part of the map and are identified with a sticker in their shop windows. The network currently has 16 establishments.
PéPedal was created in November 2023 as a result of various experiments carried out by Ciclaveiro over several years (including the CicloExpresso).). The PéPedal Trains have 12 active lines (nine on foot and three by bicycle) to the four schools in the Aveiro School Group.
To date, a number of children aged between three and ten have made 1015 journeys to school, accompanied by parent volunteers who, in the role of train drivers, guide the participants and validate their journeys on their individual cards.
Any commercial, cultural or sporting establishment in Aveiro can sign up to the Friends Network using this form and contribute to a safer, more comfortable and child-friendly city.
