The month of mobility that wants to extend throughout the year
European Mobility Week takes place from September 16 to 22, but activities related to the theme have been extended until almost the end of October.
The transition from the current moliceiros (typical Portuguese boats) to the electric version covers the 27 boats currently operating in the Ria de Aveiro and will allow for an estimated annual reduction of 400 tons of carbon dioxide.
The first 100% electric moliceiro in Aveiro started its regular activity in the end of October and by the end of 2025, all boats operating in the Ria should join this energy transition, saving around 400 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year.
The city’s ten quays are already equipped with the charging system, funded by the European Urban Innovative Actions program. Maritime tour operators who fail to comply with the conversion will automatically lose their license.
According to the statement from the Aveiro City Council (CMA), in addition to more environmentally friendly trips on the Ria de Aveiro, the boats will also provide “a more comfortable experience, as the journeys become quieter”. As an alternative to the combustion engine, this new motor has a power of 4kW and is powered by two batteries that ensure an autonomy of ten hours (uninterrupted), which in no way alters the moliceiro’s original design.
“The 100% electric moliceiros are the culmination of pioneering work by the CMA in environmental, technological and tourist terms. This commitment for these boats to have zero CO2 emissions is in line with the strategy of the Municipal Executive, which takes daily care of the environmental values of the territory to guarantee the sustainability and the economic and social future of the Municipality and the Region of Aveiro,” Ribau Esteves, president of the CMA, told LUSA.
“The moliceiros and mercantéis concession for the next five years (2025 – 2030) already includes the conversion of the engines of these 27 vessels currently operating in Aveiro to 100% electric propulsion by the end of next year,” the municipality said in its press release.
According to the CMA, the 100% electric moliceiro is one of the objectives defined in the Aveiro STEAM City project, which aims to create a smarter and more environmentally friendly city, promoting an economy based on knowledge and sustainability.
