New Year’s Eve is behind us, but there’s always time to reflect on what’s happened, not least so that we know what we want to take with us into the future. That’s why we contacted those who inspire us in the area of sustainability to take stock of 2024 and, above all, to talk about what good 2025 can bring. <\/strong><\/p>\n

This time we spoke to biologist Ayala Botto, author of the children’s book “Os Nossos Bichos”.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

1. What happened in 2024 that you’d like to see not happen in 2025?<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2024, the state budget did not end fossil fuel subsidies, the Deforestation Law was postponed, the conservation status of the wolf was reduced and the State Secretariat for Nature Conservation was eliminated. It would be good if some policies were changed in the coming years. <\/p>\n

2. Within the theme of sustainability, what would you most like to see happen in 2025?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I would like to finally see the implementation of the National Network of Marine Protected Areas, which has been planned since 2019, or to stop funding the meat industry and integrating nature into farms, which is no longer mandatory under the Common Agricultural Policy Strategic Plan.<\/p>\n

3. Give us a good idea for making Portugal a more sustainable country.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It would be important to improve public transport (in terms of quality and quantity), not only in the big cities, but throughout the country. In my experience, it’s been getting worse. <\/p>\n

4. Give us a good idea for making the world a more sustainable place.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sustainability is not just about the environment. For people to pay attention to the issue of environmental protection, other areas of their lives have to be satisfied. In this sense, it is important to improve access to health care, education and quality housing, and to promote empathy and put an end to all kinds of prejudices and sensationalism that give rise to discord, separation and wars, at a time when we should be united and focused on a bigger, common problem. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
