Portugal was the third member state of the European Union (EU) with the lowest consumption of plastic bags<\/a>, with an average of 13 per person, compared to 66.6 in the rest of Europe, reports P\u00fablico,<\/a> referring to data from 2022.<\/p>\n

In total, 29.8 billion lightweight plastic bags were consumed across the EU in 2022, which represents a decrease of 4.7 billion bags compared to 2021, according to Eurostat.<\/p>\n

Portugal leads the way, and only Poland and Belgium have better figures – with seven and four bags per person, respectively. For their part, the countries reporting the highest consumption of lightweight plastic bags per person in 2022 were Lithuania (249 bags per person), Latvia (193) and the Czech Republic (185), with most of the consumption relating to very lightweight plastic bags. <\/p>\n

All EU countries have measures in place to reduce consumption, as required by the directive on plastic bags, which aims to reduce consumption to no more than 40 per person by December 31, 2025 (this target does not include very light bags), recalls P\u00fablico.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
