In Bordeaux, the number of ships docking in the city center has doubled in the last decade, leading the population to complain about their impact on the environment and the beauty of the city.<\/span><\/p>\n

After the authorities tried to reduce their presence, managing to limit their number to 40 a year, the mayor, Pierre Hurmic, has now declared that he wants to ban cruise ships from the center of Bordeaux altogether. <\/span><\/p>\n

“More and more people in Bordeaux are bothered by the arrival of cruise ships in the city center, and it’s becoming increasingly unpleasant,”<\/strong> Hurmic, of the Green Party, told the AFP news agency<\/a>, adding that these ships look like “real floating buildings in one of the most beautiful areas of the city.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Currently, cruise ships come from the Atlantic Ocean to the French city via the Gironde estuary and are allowed to dock at the Port de la Lune. Since this location is in the heart of the historic city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Bordeaux authorities have proposed moving the docking area further north, to an area along the right bank of the River Garonne. The ships would thus be positioned downstream of the Chaban-Delmas lift bridge and away from the historic sites of the city center. <\/span><\/p>\n

However, the proposal has sparked controversy as cruise ship passengers are an important source of revenue for the local economy and can spend hundreds of euros a day on wine. According to the president of the Bordeaux-Gironde Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI), Patrick Seguin, changing the docking location “would have serious consequences for Bordeaux’s commerce,” he said in statements to the regional newspaper Sud Ouest in July. <\/span><\/p>\n

Georges Simon, president of the “Bordeaux Mon Commerce” association of traders and artisans, supports the environmental reasons for the change, but is nonetheless concerned. “If tourists stop in Bordeaux, it’s to visit Bordeaux. It’s not to visit empty quays a few kilometers before the city center. There will have to be a solution,” he told AFP. <\/span><\/p>\n

The local authorities guarantee that a river transport service and bus services will be available to take passengers to the city center. <\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
