The most festive month of the Portuguese year has arrived. At Peggada, we’ve put together the best tips so that you can make the most of the “Santos Populares” (popular saints) festivities without having a negative impact on the planet.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Santo Ant\u00f3nio, in Lisbon, used to be celebrated only in the night from June 12th to 13th. But nowadays, the festivities are multiplied by 30 and every day in June is a good time to celebrate. Porto, on the other hand, also knows how to make the most of S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o, which, despite being celebrated on June 24, is already buzzing with activity starting this weekend.<\/p>\n

Whatever the saint or the occasion, there are always ways to get around the obvious and have your party with less impact. Find out about the best parties and all the tips for a more sustainable month of June.<\/p>\n

1. Choose vegetarian food<\/h3>\n

Sardines and bifanas (a pork fillet on bread) will always be the most common snacks, but many street festivals are already offering vegetarian food.<\/p>\n

Divergente’s Santos party<\/a> will feature “seitanas” (seitan bifanas) and the June edition of the Lisbon Vegan Market<\/a> will be dedicated to the Popular Saints. If you’re cooking at home, take a look at Ana Isabel Monteiro’s<\/a> website and social networks, they’re full of good ideas.<\/p>\n

2. Reuse the decor or go diy<\/h3>\n

Cardboard boxes abandoned in the street, old paper we have at home, ribbons we’ve saved from birthdays – anything goes to make a decoration without having to buy almost anything new.<\/p>\n

Even if you buy it, reuse it ad infinitum in subsequent years. And here’s a tip: at the end of the holiday season, there’s no shortage of abandoned decorations on the streets. Take what you can save and save it for the next party.<\/p>\n

3. Bring your glass from home<\/h3>\n

Carrying your glass with you when you go out at night should be a rule, especially when you know the party will be on the street.<\/p>\n

We know that there are venues that require you to use a specific glass, with identification of the particular party, but we believe that the more we insist on not having to buy a new one, the more easily things will change. Still, for that naughty beer you drink on the way between festivals, a reusable glass is always a safe option.<\/p>\n

4. Avoid food waste<\/h3>\n

If you’re having a party at home, think carefully about the quantities of food. Of course, you don’t want to leave anyone hungry, but you don’t need to prepare food until the next St. Anthony’s Day, either. <\/p>\n

Opt for vegetarian options whenever possible and think ahead about what you can do with the leftovers. Bread, for example, can become breadcrumbs, croutons or even an “a\u00e7orda” (a typical Portuguese dish made with mushed bread and broth, eggs, olive oil, garlic and coriander). The cheeses are great with pasta the next day and the leftover fruit can always be used for juices and smoothies. Your body will thank you for that vitamin boost after all the all-nighters.<\/p>\n

If you serve meat and fish, or even if there are leftovers from the vegetarian options, there’s nothing like inventing new ways to serve them on the following days. And in any case, the freezer is a great ally to ensure that nothing spoils.<\/p>\n

5. Choose your street party well<\/h3>\n

There are many street parties, but you can and should choose the ones that make the most sense for your lifestyle.<\/p>\n

If you’re interested in environmental and social sustainability, the street party from Renovar a Mouraria’s association<\/a> is the right choice. This will be the most inclusive street festival in Lisbon and will feature musicians and food from various countries in an intercultural and community atmosphere. There are no plastic cups, and compostable cardboard plates are used for the “caldo verde” typical soup and for food that can’t be served on a napkin.<\/p>\n

The cutlery is reusable and comes from donations. There are special bins for cigarette butts, they sort their garbage and have a composter where they collect organic waste to take to the Changing (H)earth agroforestry project.<\/p>\n
