The<\/span>European Climate Pact<\/span><\/a> proposed the inclusion of an optional semester course on the climate crisis and environmental information in all courses at Portuguese universities and polytechnics. The course should contribute with ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits to the respective degrees.<\/span><\/p>\n

The environmental association ZERO, which represents the European Climate Pact in Portugal, formalized the proposal on April 23 during “Mural do Clima”, a workshop on climate change held at the Instituto Superior T\u00e9cnico (IST) in Lisbon. <\/span><\/p>\n

“It all starts with education. We can’t have people leaving higher education without being prepared and aware of all the challenges we have ahead of us, because it’s these students – called ‘engineers in the oven’ – who in a few years’ time will be making decisions about which projects we should invest in, which technologies should go ahead or be left behind,” Rita Prates of ZERO tells <\/span>SIC<\/span><\/a>highlighting the essential role of universities in the fight against climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n

IST is the first Portuguese higher education institution to offer a course on the subject: it’s called “Climate Crisis and Fair Transition” and has more than 100 students enrolled.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Tiago Domingos, professor of the Environment and Energy Scientific Area at IST and head of the course, “students in primary and secondary school already have basic knowledge of these issues, but when we get to higher education we enter another level of scientific demand and critical capacity that can only be taught here. Therefore, one of the fundamental roles of this course is to awaken in them a critical sense of these issues, the ability to analyze them in depth, resorting directly to scientific literature and also having to do independent research (…)”.<\/span><\/p>\n

In order for the initiative to grow and be applied in other higher education institutions, training is needed for teachers, but also funding for universities.<\/strong> According to Rita Prates, funding can come from the college itself or be requested from the Ministry of Education or the Environmental Fund of the Ministry of the Environment. “There are options, the important thing is to really start considering this in the curricula of our courses.”<\/span><\/p>\n

In a statement, Tiago Domingos points to the Environmental Fund as “a natural instrument to finance this means of transmitting, directly and indirectly, skills to the whole of society to deal with the climate crisis”.<\/span><\/p>\n

“It’s very important that students leave university with a great deal of knowledge about the reality of climate change and what each of us can do about it. Therefore, it’s very important that students leave with an idea of how this decision-making process works so that they can also be active players in changing legislation,” Ant\u00f3nio Vicente, Deputy Head of Representation of the European Commission, told SIC.<\/span><\/p>\n

As well as presenting the proposal to the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities (CRUP) and the Coordinating Council of Higher Polytechnic Institutes (CCISP), the ZERO association is also sending a letter to the rectors of all the country’s universities.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

She might have chosen to study Meteorology and Oceanography, but ultimately pursued Communication. And that's fine because if they don't get their weather predictions right, she wouldn't be the one to change that. She started by looking for sustainable ideas and projects for the university, and since then, she has never stopped (who stops, really?). She loves to watch tv shows, but she watches few because she is demanding. You don't need much to convince her to embrace new, \"greener\" habits and challenges.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
