The Erasmus program gives a bonus of 50 euros to European students who opt to travel by an alternative to a plane to their university of destination. To receive this extra help, university students have to travel by bus, train or carpool.<\/span><\/p>\n

“All tickets or fuel and\/or toll receipts used during the trip serve as proof,” said an official source from the Erasmus+ National Agency, in a statement to <\/span>DN\/Dinheiro Vivo<\/span><\/a>. <\/span> <\/p>\n

This measure was implemented in the 2021\/2022 school year to lower the exchange program’s carbon footprint. Three out of four Erasmus students fly to their destination and through 2014 and 2021 it is estimated that between 414,000 and 672,000 tons of carbon dioxide were generated, according to the Green Erasmus project, led by the Association for the Support of Exchange Students. <\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the “check”, leaving the plane out also gives students an extra four days’ exchange allowance.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Portugal, 1,450 students have benefited from this support in the last two years, to a total value of 72,500 euros. However, this bonus is considered insufficient and ends up being used to travel between neighboring countries. The main Erasmus destination for Portuguese students is Spain, which turns out to be the best option for receiving support without spending too many hours on the bus. <\/span><\/p>\n

Living on the outskirts of Europe and not having night trains hurts those who want to study beyond Spain. Currently, a student who wants to travel between Lisbon and Paris has to travel more than 20 hours by bus and pay around 50 euros. Traveling by plane takes just two hours and 30 minutes and the ticket can cost less than 20 euros if you buy it in advance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Green Erasmus has launched a petition to raise the value of the grant to 250 euros and increase the number of days of subsistence allowance to seven. In total, more than 5200 signatures were collected, of which more than 200 were Portuguese. <\/span><\/p>\n

The petition was discussed in Brussels in June and a document is currently being finalized so that the recommendation can gain momentum and force the extension of environmental support measures. <\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

She could have studied Meteorology and Oceanography but ended up going for Communication. And that's fine because if they don't get their weather predictions right, she wouldn't be the one to change that.
