There is something very special happening on Culatra Island. This unique space in the country is working for the decarbonization of the fishing activity, with special focus on aquaculture dedicated to bivalves.<\/p>\n

The Culatra 2030 project is a local development plan that consists in allying economic activities with environmental sustainability, defined and executed by the Residents Association of Culatra Island, located in the Ria Formosa Natural Park, in the municipality of Faro. This initiative is in the European renewable energy pilot-community program, and already has funds to support several actions to decarbonize fishing activity, especially shellfish aquaculture, in order to conserve the biodiversity of the Ria.<\/p>\n

“The vision is to create, in the Fishermen’s Village of Culatra, in the middle of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a Renewable Energy Community through an integrated intervention in the energy management model, waste management, water management and the creation of new Social Responsibility mechanisms,” as stated in the official website<\/a> of the project.<\/p>\n

The strategies include the use of photovoltaic equipment and vessels to support fishing, energy storage equipment, and solar boat charging units, both for support
to aquaculture activities as tourism.<\/p>\n

This energy transition process is based on five pillars: generation, storage, and distribution of electricity; heating and air conditioning of homes and energy efficiency; transportation to, from, and on the island; water supply and treatment; and waste recovery management.<\/p>\n

The project has had very positive results due to the strong participation of the entire community, bringing together public entities, academia, business, and the population.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Liliana is from Lisbon with roots in Lamego and wherever she goes. She always had a greater love for Nature, and that's why she considers it's so important to preserve it.
