Porto City Council has launched a campaign through which residents can donate objects such as household appliances, furniture and computer equipment so that they can be recovered or repaired and donated to social institutions.
Porto City Council has launched the Christmas campaign “In addition to giving, you’re already helping” to promote the donation of “end-of-life” goods, such as household appliances, furniture and computer equipment that can be recovered or repaired by “a specialized team”. The donated goods will then be given to social institutions and/or people who need them.
Although it was launched at Christmas time, the campaign is still going on and you still have time to take part. Residents can deliver their goods to the Ecocentro da Prelada, where EcoPorto – Porto’s Center for Circularity, an initiative of Porto Ambiente that promotes the reuse, repair and recirculation of products, is responsible for the campaign.
“A network effort, made possible by partnerships with the city’s social institutions, parish councils, the University of Porto and various companies linked to circularity in the city, which allow the ‘new’ goods to fulfill their charitable purpose, improving the quality of life of those who need it most,” Porto Ambiente explained in a statement. press release.
Since September, when it began operating, EcoPorto has repaired more than 250 objects, mostly chairs, vacuum cleaners, microwaves, lamps and bookcases, “which, after being repaired, have been given to institutions and residents, giving a second life to products that would otherwise have been discarded”.
“In less than three months, the teams’ work has made it possible to avoid the emission of around 5.4 tons of CO2eq and to reuse 1.3 tons of electrical and electronic equipment and furniture, promoting recirculation and extending the life cycle of materials,” reads the press release.
In addition to delivery to EcoPorto, the municipality also offers free home collection, which can be scheduled through the Porto Line on 220 100 220.
